Do I need a referral to get an appointment?

In most cases, no referral is required. Many patients come directly for exams, glaucoma evaluations, retinal concerns, cataract consultations, or second opinions.

However, some insurance plans require referral authorization. We recommend checking with your insurance provider. If you’re unsure, our team can help verify your benefits before your visit.

Do you accept Medicare?

Yes, we accept Medicare.

Do you accept VA (Veterans Affairs) patients?

Yes, we proudly participate with the VA. A VA referral is required before we can schedule your appointment. Please note that it can sometimes take up to a month for the VA to fax us the referral documentation.

Do you take walk-ins?

We do not accept walk-ins. However, we can often accommodate same-day appointments for urgent concerns. Please call first so we can ensure a provider is available at your preferred location.

Can I get a second opinion?

Absolutely. We welcome second opinion consultations and are happy to provide thorough evaluations.

During Your Visit

How long is a typical exam?

After check-in, your vision will be tested, eye pressure measured, and your pupils dilated. Dilation alone requires approximately 30 minutes.

First visits may take two hours or longer, especially if treatment is provided the same day.

Can I drive home after my appointment?

Usually, yes. We provide disposable sunglasses, or you may bring your own.

If you’ve previously had difficulty driving after dilation or if laser treatment is performed, you will need someone to drive you home.

How will my doctor examine my eyes?

Your exam includes vision testing, pupil response, eye movement evaluation, peripheral vision testing, and eye pressure screening. After dilation, your doctor will examine the macula, retina, and vitreous using specialized instruments.

Additional testing may include:

  • Fundus Photography – Detailed retinal imaging
  • Fluorescein Angiography – Imaging of retinal blood flow using a dye
  • Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) – Cross-sectional retinal scans
  • Visual Field Testing – Measures blind spots and peripheral vision
  • Ultrasound – Imaging using sound waves for structural evaluation

Conditions & Specialty Care

How do I know if I need to visit WKI?

You should be evaluated if you experience:

  • Sudden vision changes
  • Flashes or new floaters
  • A dark curtain or shadow
  • Sudden blur or distortion
  • Eye pain or pressure

If you’ve been diagnosed or referred for:

  • Macular degeneration
  • Diabetic eye disease
  • Retinal tear or detachment
  • Glaucoma

If your vision is gradually worsening:

  • Difficulty reading or night driving
  • Wavy or distorted lines
  • Frequent prescription changes

When in doubt, it’s always better to be checked. Early treatment can prevent permanent vision loss.

Why do I need to see a retina sub-specialist?

Your referring doctor has identified a retinal condition that requires advanced testing, specialized treatment, or close monitoring.

Will I be changing eye doctors permanently?

No. We evaluate and treat the retinal condition, then communicate all findings and plans back to your primary eye doctor. You will continue ongoing care with them.

What if I need surgery?

Many retinal treatments are performed in-office. If surgery is required, most procedures are outpatient and completed in under 60 minutes using minimally invasive techniques with local anesthesia and IV sedation.

Our physicians operate at several regional surgical centers, including:

  • Sentara Virginia Beach General
  • Riverside Hampton Surgery Center
  • Riverside Regional Medical Center
  • Physician’s Surgery Center of Tidewater

Can I take my eye drops before surgery?
