Taking Ozempic or Wegovy? Here's What to Know About Sudden Vision Loss
Don't Panic About GLP-1 Medications. But Don't Ignore Sudden Vision Changes.
There has been considerable discussion about semaglutide medications such as Ozempic and Wegovy and a rare optic nerve condition called NAION.
For patients, I think the most important message is relatively simple:
Don't stop a medication because of a headline. But don't ignore a sudden change in your vision.
NAION occurs when blood flow to part of the optic nerve becomes inadequate, potentially causing permanent injury. It characteristically produces sudden, painless vision loss. (National Eye Institute)
Several studies now suggest semaglutide may be associated with an increased risk of NAION, although the absolute risk remains small. A large 2026 study of GLP-1 receptor agonists found approximately 39 cases per 10,000 users over three years compared with approximately 29 per 10,000 people using SGLT2 inhibitors. (JAMA Network)
What Should You Watch For?
Seek prompt evaluation if you suddenly notice:
- Vision loss in one eye
- An unexplained dark or gray area
- A portion of your visual field missing
- Sudden significant blurring or dimming
- A dramatic unexplained difference between your eyes
These symptoms do not automatically mean NAION.
Retinal detachment, retinal vascular occlusion and other conditions can also produce acute visual changes.
That's why the correct response isn't to diagnose yourself.
It's to get examined.
Should You Stop Your GLP-1?
Not on your own.
GLP-1 medications can have important health benefits, and the American Academy of Ophthalmology has not recommended blanket discontinuation based solely on concern about NAION. (AAO)
Discuss your individual risks with your prescribing physician and eye doctor.
But if your vision changes suddenly, that conversation should happen promptly.
