Dr. Glenn Carwell brings a wealth of experience and expertise to his role as a designated Senior Aviation Medical Examiner (AME) for the FAA. With a distinguished career spanning decades, he has dedicated himself to the fields of aviation medicine and surgery, ensuring the safety and well-being of pilots and aircrew.
Dr. Carwell served as a Flight Surgeon for the MAC 512 C5A Wing at Dover Air Force Base for five years during his tenure in the Air Force Reserves. His commitment to aviation medicine continued in the Naval Reserves, where he held the position of Flight Surgeon for the VFC12 Aggressor Squadron at Oceana and VR56 NAS Norfolk. He retired as a Captain in 1999, leaving behind
a legacy of excellence in military aviation healthcare.
A passionate aviator himself, Dr. Carwell holds an Air Transport Pilot Certificate with over 5,000 flight hours and owns a Cessna 340 aircraft. His first-hand experience as a pilot enriches his understanding of the complexities and demands of aviation, making him uniquely qualified to assess the medical fitness of other aviators.
Dr. Carwell is a 1970 graduate of Vanderbilt University Medical School, followed by postgraduate residency training at Duke University, Eastern Virginia Medical School, and the University of Vienna, Austria. He is board certified in General Surgery and Plastic Surgery, with national specialty certification in Surgery of the Hand. His active-duty service as an Air Force Flight Surgeon began in 1972, where he worked with RF4-C Phantoms at Shaw AFB, eventually rising to the position of Chief of Flight Medicine.
Since 1979, Dr. Carwell has practiced plastic surgery in the Tidewater area, specializing in cosmetic, microsurgery, and reconstructive procedures. His contributions to the medical field extend beyond practice; he has published over
twenty articles and book chapters, sharing his knowledge and insights with the medical community.
Outside of his professional commitments, Dr. Carwell is devoted to his family, married to Lynn Chapman and proud father of four children and five grandchildren. He has also served as the past president of The Military Aviation Museum Board and is currently a city-appointed Commissioner of the Virginia Beach Historic Preservation Commission.
