Viet Q. Chau, MD, FACS

Dr. Viet Q. Chau is a fellowship-trained vitreoretinal surgeon specializing in the medical and surgical management of complex retinal diseases, including retinal detachment, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, epiretinal membrane, macular hole, and retinal vein occlusion. 

Dr. Chau earned his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, where he was inducted to both the Alpha Omega Alpha and Gold Humanism Honor Societies. He completed his ophthalmology residency at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at the University of Miami, consistently ranked one of the top eye hospitals in the United States. He subsequently completed his fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery at Associated Retinal Consultants/William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan, one of the country's premier vitreoretinal training programs.

Dr. Chau is an active clinical researcher with publications in several journals including Retina, Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science, and Ophthalmology Retina, and has presented his work at national meetings including the American Society of Retina Specialists, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and the Vit-Buckle Society. His research has been recognized with multiple awards and travel grants. He is committed to expanding access to the latest medical and surgical advancements in retinal care for patients throughout the Hampton Roads region.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Chau enjoys spending time with his family, and stays active through racket sports, hiking, and traveling the world.
